Mabel Moody’s Recipe Book


The following recipes come from a little notebook enscribed ‘M.W. Moody Nov. 17th 1899. At this time Mabel would have been 21 years old, living at the family home of 17 London Street, Basingstoke.


We are in the process of testing these recipes, but in the meantime they are for interest only and we have no idea whether they work.

Scone

½ lb Flour, 2 oz butter, 2 oz Sugar, 2 teaspoons baking powder


Mix with skim milk rather stiff.

Ground Rice Cake

6 oz flour, 6 oz ground rice 6 oz butter, 4 oz sugar, 2 eggs, dessert spoon baking powder, a little nutmeg & lemon peel.


To Mix

Warm the butter then add eggs well beaten then the sugar, spice etc, then flour & rice mixed together with the baking powder, also about ½ tea cup of milk. Bake 2 hrs in rather a hot oven.

Rice Mould

A good tea cup of rice & a quart of milk, put in the oven & let it cook until the milk has soaked up, then beat up 2 eggs, flavour with 1 teaspoon of vanilla, sweeten to taste. Beat well with the plimme, put back in the oven until it just bubbles up, stir & turn into a wet mould.

Short Crust

½ lb flour, 4 oz butter, 1 dessertspoon sugar, 1 salt spoon salt, yoke of an egg.


Roll out once only
